The Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence is one of Italy’s most renowned museums, famous above all for its masterpieces by the great Renaissance artist Michelangelo. One of its highlights is the Hall of the Prisoners, where visitors can admire the artist’s unfinished “Slaves”, powerful sculptures that seem to struggle to break free from the marble. Near the Tribuna of David, a series of paintings by Alessandro Allori offers a charming example of Renaissance floral symbolism. The Accademia has housed Michelangelo’s original David since 1873. The statue was moved from its outdoor location in Piazza della Signoria partly for conservation reasons and partly to create a dedicated Michelangelo museum in celebration of the fourth centenary of the artist’s birth. Today, the museum preserves a small but extraordinary collection of his works, including the four unfinished Prisoners created for the tomb of Pope Julius II, and the unfinished statue of Saint Matthew. The David displayed in Piazza della Signoria is a replica, while the Accademia houses the original masterpiece. Come and discover one of the world’s most iconic museums, filled with historical and artistic treasures by Michelangelo. Book the tour and explore this remarkable chapter of art history with our expert guide.
