The architectural design of the Cathedral dates back to the late 13th century, when Arnolfo di Cambio conceived the plan for Santa Maria del Fiore. The Dome that later became the symbol of the church—and an iconic landmark for all of Tuscany—is instead the masterpiece of Renaissance genius Filippo Brunelleschi. During construction, the Cathedral faced one of the most challenging architectural problems of its time: how to build such a vast Dome and develop machines capable of working at unprecedented heights. Brunelleschi’s revolutionary solution, the invention of the “double-shell structure,” finally made it possible to complete the project. The Dome stands today not only as a symbol of beauty but as an extraordinary example of human ingenuity and technical innovation. Inside the Cathedral, Giorgio Vasari began the fresco cycle of the Last Judgement, which was later completed by his student Federico Zuccari in 1579. When finished, Santa Maria del Fiore was the largest basilica ever built, stretching 153 meters in length, and it continues to astonish visitors with its grandeur. Giotto’s Bell Tower, designed by the famed master himself, rises beside the Cathedral. After Giotto’s death, its construction was continued by Andrea Pisano and later completed by Francesco Talenti. This tour has been designed to allow participants to admire these extraordinary masterpieces, celebrating the timeless beauty and creativity of Florentine art.
