Carrara was born at the foothills of the Apuan Alps and is still considered the world capital of marble. The marble mining tradition is not only linked to artists and powerful patrons, but also to the lives of the miners — generations of men who worked with strength and courage in the quarries. The world-famous Carrara marble is still extracted from the Apuan Alps today, with tens of millions of tons of marble and hard stone mined and processed each year. The quarries are a world of their own, a breathtaking landscape suspended between the sea and the peaks of the Apennines. Aboard a Land Rover Defender, along narrow and winding gravel roads, we will reach one of the highest viewpoints of the marble caves. This experience will allow you to see the modern machinery used for excavation and to understand the techniques behind the different extraction phases. Afterward, as we head toward the second valley, we will stop for a refreshing glass of Prosecco before entering an underground quarry, where even the most seasoned travelers will be struck by its moon-like atmosphere. Back at the starting point, a cold lunch featuring local specialties and a tasting of Lardo di Colonnata IGP will be the perfect way to conclude this unforgettable day.
